Mazarin

Sometimes music is so inspiring and moving that even when it is unrelated directly to the Garage Monthly Music Night I feel compelled to share here.  I am extremely fortunate that for much of my workday I am able to listen to music on my headphones.  Today’s artists included some cuts from Spiritualized’s 1992 brilliant Laser Guided Melodies, the amazing Hearts and Unicorns (2005) from Giant Drag , and then I started playing Mazarin.  It’s not a pharmaceutical.  Click here to get a bit of info on them.  I started with Watch It Happen from 2000, which was introduced to me a couple years ago by my pal (and occasional Garagee) Jordan and immediately gripped me with its beauty, honesty, and of course great guitars and unbelievable songwriting (two of my favorite things in the world).  “Wheats” might well be the single of the decade, and like so many of these incredible songs, gives me goose bumps every single time I hear it.  No shit, every time.   Consider the perfect simplicity of lines like:

“I must have spent thirty rainy days, writing this simple melody to tell you that I’m over you but oh yeah, that’s right, I’m not over you”, or  “all of the things you gave me when you loved me, oh yeah, that’s right, you never loved me at all”

I just think “Geezus, all those years I tried to write broken-hearted love songs, and they all came out sounding like they were written by a 10th-grader, this guy has distilled every emotion I ever tried to capture down to these simple lines…why didn’t I think of that?”

And that’s just one song!  There are several other choice selections, like opener “Chasing the Girl”, and “Deed to Drugs”, which I think is what it would sound like if Simon and Garfunkel decided they liked Paul Westerberg more than Brian Wilson.  Listening to Watch it Happen today was so stirring I moved right into the next album in my personal Mazarin chronology, We’re Already There from 2005, I think.  Lots of the usual droning guitar (apparently main dude Quentin was in an earlier group, Azusa Plane, whose hallmark was droning guitar wall of noise stuff…hmmm, better check that out too!) alongside pure pop bliss, and even some political lyrics (“American Apathy”) to go along with the heart-rending misery of cuts like “Louise”, another shiver-inducer.  And then on to A Tall-Tale Storyline, from 2001.  More inspired songwriting, including maybe the only tune which could rival “Wheats” for top honors in the Mazarin catalog, the genius “My Favorite Green Hill”.  This song contains enough wah-wah and feedback raunch to make any J. Mascis fan raise an eyebrow, and the sorta “la-la-la” vocals modulate with such ease that the writer’s gift is obvious.

Three albums in a row in their entirety, resulting in…an extra listen to “Wheats”, and extra listen to “My Favorite Green hill”, and then a  playlist of all my favorites.  And when it was all done and my ipod battery had died?  I wished for more.  Battery is charging right now so my walk to BART can be enhanced with Mazarin…

Song(s) of the Night

I loved “Slip It In”, I’m sure I never quite realized what a ripping guitar player Greg Ginn was (is?).

The Led Zeppelin bootleg was awesome.

The Mothers of Invention song was great, hilarious, and wow, from 1966!

A final plug here for Grinderman:  The 2010 record Grinderman2 is unbelievably good: dirty, nasty, heavy, powerful rock and roll.  Gets a little syrupy even at times!  I must now research Nick Cave’s entire back catalog, especially the Bad Seeds, which is the same group as Grinderman…

May 7 at the Garage

Despite not having an actual one year anniversary party, Music Night on the one year anniversary of the Garage’s transformation from residential storage vessel to über-hip (yeah, sure) music listening room was a smashing success, albeit a shorter endeavor than usual.  Playlist below.  I eliminated the category of “format” as it seemed to provide little interest, and the vast majority of music is played from ipod and similar devices.  Some notable bits I learned while compiling the list:  The Cramps tune was originally by the Sonics, from 1965… I never knew the producer of the Cramps’ seminal Songs the Lord Taught Us ?  The one and only Alex Chilton…I was mistaken as to the year of Jimi’s death, was actually 1970…the Rose Tattoo album from 1978 was on the same label as 2009 record from the Answer…

Stork Club in Oakland, tonight April 15th, don’t miss it!!!!  My gear is on standby as backup equipment for the band!!!!

Song(s) of the Night

Geez, I harangue the attendees to vote for song of the night, then don’t even offer my own picks!  I loved the part of the song I heard from Yuck, and the Transam tune was awesome: really very simple parts which somehow added up to a driving whole that was pure groove.

Shows

Don’t miss Cutlass Supreme at the Stork Club in Oakland Friday, April 15th.  These guys are as good as when they were playing regularly ten years ago, and I am told they have a ton of great new material, so come check it out at O-Town’s friendliest venue!

I also gotta mention my excitement for a show at Slim’s on April 20th: Big Light, opening for the Bridge.  I know little about the headliners (“jam band” from Baltimore?), but Big Light are local heroes with an amazing huge sound that fans of Dinosaur jr. and Neil Young should find attractive.

And I think it might be a mistake to miss next Monday’s show at the Fillmore.  Headliners Tame Impala are mildly interesting but once again it is the opening act that is the draw for me: Yuck, who sounded like something very special (in a raunchy electric-guitar kinda way) based on the couple of tracks shared by Joe at the last Music Night.

Negativland vs. SST

So I did a little internet sleuthing to refresh myself on the skinny between Negativland, SST Records, Island Records, U2, Casey Kasem, etc.  As near as I can tell SST Records did indeed behave badly and very much against the spirit of free expression usually associated with them when they decided to sue Negativland basically because Negativland exposed SST’s press release threats  to sue Negativland!  Undoubtedly there were legal fees incurred by SST in dealings with Island Records’ demands that they stop production of the recordings and destroy all known copies of it( which SST did!).   In any case it seems clear enough to me that SST did not back up their Artist, and in fact did just the opposite!   Negativland are notorious anti-establishment shit-stirrers, so it is probable that they were not especially cooperative in the whole affair (good for them!).  I have ordered a copy of “Fair Use: The Story of the Letter U and the Numeral 2” which I hope to have available for perusal at next month’s event.

April 2 at the Garage

Beautiful bloomin’ weather set the scene for beautiful bloomin’ tunes at the April 2 first Saturday version of monthly Music Night at my Garage cum Music Room.  A whopping five participating “DJ’s” and one spectator meant the biggest turnout since September!   New release from Tapes n’ Tapes, Outside, has been in heavy rotation for me and I had to share an epic track from it (“Hidee Ho”) before we jumped into the theme format.  Here is the playlist from Saturday:

Paradise

•March 31, 2011 • 2 Comments

An odd circumstance at work allowed me to access the (basically abandoned) Paradise Lounge on Folsom Street in SF.  Wow.  A little weird, very nostalgic.  Fond memories of watching Cake, Smashing Orange, and others came flooding back.  there is a very slight possibility that we may be able to host the May music night there, which would be pretty sweet since that will be the anniversary party, the “Second Annual Mayday Music Night at the Garage” event.   An alternate possibility is an additional music night sometime in April…I am unsure of the access yet but stay tuned!
