A week from tomorrow July 2 regularly scheduled  Visceraudio will take place…I recognize that as this is the July 4th weekend many people have plans already scheduled, so please contact me and advise if you can make an alternate Saturday in July, that’s how we did it last year to accommodate as many Visceraudioans as possible…but the July first Saturday event will take place so see you there 9:30 as usual…

How’s This Work Again?

Oh yeah, gotta post at least semi-regularly…Sorry kids, just haven’t given Visceraudio nearly the attention it requires. Even June’s official playlist is not quite ready! But stay tuned for more exciting developments, and regularly scheduled July Visceraudio updates…

Nostalgia

"these memories can't wait..."

After explaining to first-timer (and Samiam founder) Ryan S. that I was hoping the walls of the Visceraudio Garage would be “plastered with rock n roll posters and stuff”, he showed up for last night’s edition with boxes full of the most unbelievable punk rock ephemera you could dream up.  Stickers, flyers, posters, ‘zines: a real historical archive of (mostly) Bay Area punk in the 80’s and beyond.  What a gift, thanks Ryan!  Stay tuned for last night’s playlist…

The Evens

Full playlist from June 4th visceraudio coming soon but had to mention while still fresh in my mind: the Evens sounded amazing even before I was told it’s an Ian MacKaye thing. Thanks for playing this one Chris F.!

If, after reading my gushing review of Fucked Up’s amazing new record David Comes To Life, you simply can’t wait until June 7th for the official Matador Records release, then check this out.  Like they needed any more indie cred.  Can’t wait to see what happens when this record starts to get the attention it deserves.

Bits & Pieces

Fucked Up is still topping my personal playlist, just about a week til official release…working next to Slim’s in SF I sometimes have occasion to experience the bands outside of the actual show: last year heard Black Rebel Motorcycle Club soundcheck (“Red Eyes and Tears”) one late afternoon around 6 o’clock as my work day was ending; shoulda stuck around last Wednesday, maybe coulda heard Stiff Little Fingers’ check too!…Of course sometimes it isn’t just vicarious: inside the club last April to see Big Light perform, great band, great show, bass player kinda stole the show…Yuck at the Independent in July is the next one officially on my calendar…bummer the Twilight Singers at the Fillmore was cancelled due to “illness”; they had played the scheduled show in Seattle Sunday May 22nd and then played in LA as scheduled Wednesday May 25, so SF was the only unfortunate cut, hope Dulli’s not a certain kind of sick again…

Branding

Still too lazy to fine tune this here vehicle I call visceraudio, but it’ll happen soon, I promise.  Meantime, an interesting concept has arisen in texts, emails and assorted random discussions about this blog and the event it is intended to chronicle, that event being the monthly gathering of music fans that takes place in my garage on the first Saturday of every month since May 2010.  After a couple of unofficial (“unofficial” meaning any day other than the first Saturday) nights of music and hang time in the Garage, Joe B. referred to one of the nights as a “visceraudio session”.  So I figured, why the hell not?  Just call it “visceraudio”.  The mouthful that was “Monthly Music Night”, the generic “Music Night”, the humdrum “Listening Party”, why bother with these when the obvious aptest moniker was right there in front of me, revealed by Joe in a stroke of marketing genius?!?  So come to the June Visceraudio and experience it for yourself…

Fucked Up

Relax, it’s a band, the Garage didn’t burn down or anything!  But the new album by Fucked Up, David Comes To Life, due out June 7 (I did not realize until a bit of internet snooping that the album was leaked and I am listening to it in advance of official release!), is so impossibly, ferociously good it might well have the intensity to incite combustion without warning.  Yes, your stereo or brain or house might catch on fire once you hit the play button.

I listen to a lot of music (duh) and sometimes I encounter something so good I listen to it again right after I’ve first listened to it.  And then if it’s really good I will listen to it once or twice a day for a few days more, and it gets into my heavy rotation and I start off Music Night (hereafter referred to as “visceraudio” – more on that to come) with a track from it and maybe also whatever else  is getting a lot of  personal play.

But rarely have I felt compelled to listen to the same record back-to-back-to-back-to-back etc etc ad  infinitum in the way I am currently doing with this album.  Really, over and over and over again.  There are 18 songs, none under 3 minutes, total of more than 75 minutes of music.  And there is not a bad song on the record, not even close.  Not even one that I am tempted to skip to hear the next one.  This is not heavy rotation, it is the only rotation.  Here is some of what I have put on the back burner, shelved for the time being, in order to focus solely on Fucked Up: Yuck, Tapes n Tapes, Grinderman, Twilight Singers – yes, even the beloved Twilight Singers’ new record, which after one listen sounds as raw and hard as anything Dulli has put out in a decade, has been temporarily ignored while I remain in this rut, this glorious rut, this unbearably awesome Fucked Up rut.  No end in sight, and I’m loving it down here!

So go get Fucked Up!

June Music Night at the Garage

•May 24, 2011 • 2 Comments

Well the time is once again nearly upon us for noisome revelry and aural review at the First Saturday of the Month Music Listening Night, June Edition!  Once again themes will be the partial basis for song selection on Saturday June 4th.  Typical 9:30 start time (parents, allows for thorough tuck-in!).  Lotsa great music going on in the world right now despite (or perhaps “as a result of”?) the vacuous and insipid commercial music machinery which continues to belch forth disposable sputum which I will be forever grateful I can largely ignore and rarely experience except by occasional periphery.  Some come on over to the Garage where real, vital, interesting musical art is discussed, displayed, absorbed, and otherwise explored.  Who am I kidding, we listen to a little disposable sputum every now and then too!  Your complete musical fulfillment and audio pleassurance is personally guaranteed by your host:  Me.

No, I will not scratch your back.

See you there!!!!
